Better Late. . .

When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, you will return to the Lord your God in later days and obey Him. Deuteronomy 4:30
Distress comes from two directions majorly, one is that which is beyond control, and the other is one that has come as a result of our choices. In this world we face distress, coming from all directions and from all possible avenues that link directly with us. In fact, everything that is part of us, is a potential cause for our distress sometime in life. It could be children, parents, wife, husband, work, neighbor, resources, friends, relatives, and the list is endless. How do we live daily with that understanding that distress is like a disaster waiting to happen.

Many distresses in life come without prior warning and at times suddenly. Since it can come suddenly and it comes with lots of unpleasantries and are in no state to wish it away it can cause harm to us. Distress can cause a lot of pain and disorientation, it can cause disappointments and mental anguish, it can bring about anxiety and mental disorders, can cause ill health. Why must we reach that level to seek solution, and especially when solution is always available?

Spiritual distress is not only when everything goes wrong because we have turn away from God as children of Israel did; Spiritually people get frustrated and distressed. When you try to maintain a close relationship with God and keeps failing, or when a member of your faith has cause you untold pain, or when socially abandoned or neglected and many more, would cause a spiritual distress. Solution? Back to God.

God is the solution for distress. Whether it be due to our making or beyond choices He is the solution. “Jesus is our ever-present help in time of need. Only call upon Him in faith, and He has promised to hear and answer your petitions.” – {Counsels for the Church p.334}. A right choice and obedience to God is preventive to consequential disasters. Those undesirable occurrences can be avoided by being obedient. Like caring parents to a child, rules and boundaries are ways of protecting the child however when such are disobeyed things could happen that can be painful and even devastating. As long as one’s life is spared through the circumstances, there is a room to apply the learned lesson. But why must we learn the hard way?

In essence, our returning could be as a result of learning the hard way. Knowing that our disobedience has plunged us into difficulties, and that there is no other place to turn to; we remember God we once neglected and ignored. That God becomes our final choice. this is the irony of human thinking. The mind that is under sin influence. Praise be to God who is ever ready to receive us when we finally chose Him.

It will only be late when we shall have died without turning our hearts to God. While there is life in us, we have an opportunity to get our messed life mended in Christ Jesus alone.
