The Rock

“There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2
It is amazing what the word of God speaks about ‘the rock’. The words of the main text are resounded in 2 Samuel 22:32 “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? Hannah in her prayer recognizes that God is the only holy one, the rock, compared to none. In her distress she acknowledged God as the Rock, that kept me wondering why, and how did she get that understanding or the knowledge of God as a rock. What did she understand God, the rock to mean in her life? All these questions find their clue on how she opened up to Him and her faith in what God was able to do for her. She may have heard of the story of how his people were sustained in the wilderness and how they drank water from the rock. May have heard of the words of Moses saying, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. Deuteronomy 32:4 and what God said to him, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock. Exodus 33:21 and she wanted that experience to become hers.

Hannah may have had the understanding that the rock provides the sense of security, comfort, assurance and recognized that those can only be truly found in God alone. David reaffirms that many times. David acknowledged God as his rock of salvation, and when “.. Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. At what was a narrow escape for David, he knew that it was God the rock that rescued him; the place was called the Rock of Escape.” 1 Samuel 23:28 It may have become Hannah’s conviction that that rock is the only secure place to lay her worries and burdens, the rock that would provide her needs, take care of her concerns in life. What came of the rock for her was a blessing of a son Samuel.

Paul spoke the following concerning the rock in 1 Corinthians 10:4 “For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” I believe that in the rock, our God, we can get all our hearts’ desires fulfilled, from that rock flows the eternal, endless blessings of life. E. W. White has this to say; “Unless those who receive the truth are thoroughly converted, and there is a radical change in their life and character, the soul is not riveted to the eternal Rock ..” – {Gospel Workers 92 17.1} I would like to be fastened to this rock it is a sure rock.
