And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. (Titus 3:14 [KJV])
Christian walk is about serving others with the purpose of showing them the way to eternal life; that is the basic task upon all who profess to be Christ’s followers. Not forgetting that we are human and sinners, which makes us subjects of human examination, to be viewed with skepticism, to be checked whether we are true or not.
So our daily conducts reflect our true worth and determine how the people will react to the gospel of their salvation. It is central to Christianity to be true in our way of life in order to be effective in evangelism. No wonder, one is not accepted in his own home where he/she is well known.
The text has a hidden key of very important value to our lesson today; ‘lean to maintain good works’ this phrase and especially the word maintain is revealing to us the essence of consistency. (ESV) puts it this way, ’devote themselves to good works’. You can still see the element of commitment and continuity. Without being consistent in our demonstration of faith and good works we cannot convince others of our sincerity in faith, somehow this element validates our spiritual authenticity before them.
People relate what we do with what we say; a child will look into his mother or father’s eyes for a sign of seriousness while being scolded or reprimanded for their bad behavior. At the same time that child will respond based on how consistent their parents have been in delivering discipline. After a while they have known what to expect from mother and father and respond accordingly. We have often heard people saying Pastor X or Elder Z has nothing to tell me; that statement reveal what they know about the pastor and the elder. Mrs White states it this way, “There is an eloquence far more powerful than the eloquence of words in the quiet, consistent life of a pure, true Christian. What a man is has more influence than what he says. A godly life is a living epistle, known and read of all men.” -The Signs of the Times, May 18, 1904 par. 1
Looking into the entire story of Israelites you can see that, their main issue with God is in their inconsistency relationship with God. You can see this in Joshua’s plea – “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth…” Josh 24:14 (KJV)
