Healing before Preaching

And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Luke 10:9

There is a way to people’s hearts, something more appealing to them that a sermon about unknown Jesus of Nazareth. Therefore the easy way to get their attention is to bring something that will appeal to them; something intriguing and beneficial. This is why the multitudes followed Jesus from Morning to evening so that they can see more of it. Along with that came teachings and preaching that would transform many of them for eternity.

Luke 10:9 is part of instructions from Jesus to his disciples as they were sent to go and evangelize. It was about the way in which they will reach out to the people, the strategy of stirring their hearts without them realizing. Jesus used the same strategy of reaching out he to them outwardly and that opened the inner. Ellen White said,“The hearts of His hearers were drawn to Him; for He had healed their sick, had comforted their sorrowing ones, and had taken their children in His arms and blessed them. When He opened His lips to speak, their attention was riveted upon Him, and every word was to some soul a savor of life unto life.”Christian Service p.119

Healing could be showing concern and love for others, to be there for them when thy are down, to give them what they needed at the time it mattered most, to love them without conditions, to serve them with servanthood spirit. Healing could be being there when one is lonely, or in need to be consoled. It is the true friendship, to be aware and concerned of others. Those moments are healing moments. It may appear physical but it has a spiritual touch to it, such acts are what constitutes a true Christianity, it is the essence of Christianity.

To be effective Christians in introducing Christ to others we need to touch them on individual basis, and in their community, and their families then they will respond to Christ call to become his disciples. We have been called to tell others of God’s saving grace the effective method of doing so is to have close connection with all people. I recently saw a graffiti on a public transport, “Get plugged – Get connected” to be Christ’s ambassadors we must be well plugged and connected to Him but also be plugged and connected to the people and know them and extend real time support the best way possible.

Finally, we should not forget to convey the real message that, “The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you[ESV]. The kingdom of God has come near to you. Heaven can down to save us and none should miss an opportunity to make this good news known to others who are shadowed by hopelessness of sin. This is the core message to them.
