O Lord, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O Lord, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy. Habakkuk 3:2 (ESV)
Would fear make you faithful, devout Christian? What role does fear play in your Christianity, in your relationship with God? Can one be saved because of mere fear? Would fear be part of God’s way of relating with humanity. Can love be enclosed or enshrouded with fear or could true love and fear dwell in the same soul? These are tough questions that we need to unfold and address. We need to know and acknowledge whether there is any fear in us, making us display a certain kind of life style that is not genuine.
Christians are not immuned to fear infact, It is normal to have fear and each one of us human beings possess a certain fear for something or someone. You may have heard of hydrophobia, fear of water and many other phobias existing. It is no doubt we serve an all powerful God who can deliver us from any situation but still fear sneaks in and take control of our lives.
The coming event of the soon coming Christ are fearful for those whose hearts are fixed on earthly things. Just as they fear for their security and that of their property, as they fear of what would become of their investments following the inflation or falling market values, or exploding cost of living etc. However, that fear will be nothing compare to the fear of facing God the Creator in our guilty state. That fear will be terrifying and not possible for our minds to comprehend now. That fear will be so terrible because there was a way out of it and each one knew of it but made contrary choices. What appeared to be unreal will be realized to be reality.
The situation of fear will not be among those who made their choice to accept Christ as their mediator and their way to eternal life this who spent their time with Him In His work, in prayers, in worship of Him, in doing His will. As it is said of disciples, “They had supposed that the disciples would be overcome with fear and confusion when brought before the Sanhedrin. But, instead, these witnesses spoke as Christ had spoken, with a convincing power that silenced their adversaries.” Acts of Apostles p. 63
The fear of eternal loss is a real fear, that is what people who made wrong choice in life will face, when Jesus comes the second time. The reality will dawn on them and the fear will grip their heart. That is why they will seek to end their lives quickly or hide from the coming destruction of sin and its accomplices. That which was made for Satan and His angels, but instead they chose to be part of. Revelation 6:16 “And they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.”
May we have the fear of God in us to make right choice but not to leave in fear of judgement. Instead the fear of God will give us confidence to say, Isaiah 25:9 “On that day it will be said, “Look, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him. Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.” when He comes for us.
