Actions of the flesh – Envy

Envy, murder, drunkenness, wild partying, and things like that. I am telling you now, as I have told you in the past, that people who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Gal 5:21 [ISV])

Envy has caused untold pain in this world and even in Heaven. It was the cause for rebellion in heaven and what followed after that it is a tail of every living thing. The bible is full of examples of envy at its peak; one such well-known stories of the Bible is that of King Saul when he allowed envy to overtake him he became obsessed with getting rid of David. He became ineffective in discharging his duty he spent the rest of his life pursuing David in order to destroy him. What a waste of time! “It was envy that made Saul miserable and put the humble subject of his throne in jeopardy.  What untold mischief has this evil trait of character worked in our world!” – Patriarchs and Prophets.. Envy is the offspring of pride, and if it is entertained in the heart, it will lead to hatred, and eventually to revenge and murder.” –Patriarchs and Prophets p.651

Cain allowed envy to control him to the point of killing his own brother. There is no limit to what can be done under the influence of envy.
Daniel was also envied and a plan to eliminate him ended up with him in a lions’ den. God rescued him and caused the plotters to die instead.
We know the story of Joseph whose brothers planned to end his life and instead he landed in Egypt as a slave, but things changed because God was with him.

Satan is the chief of envy. Envy was found in him and that is why he was thrown out of heaven with a third of angels. That did not change and has not change and will not change in him. Remember what he did to Job of old? It was envy that drove him to seek to destroy Job but he failed. The same is happening all those who have made-up their minds follow Christ; Satan is envious of them and he would pursue them at any cost.

If you look at the above envy related bible stories you will see the following interesting pattern:

  • It is a battle, a struggle between good and evil, between God and Satan – the evil forces are working hard to destroy the lives of those faithful to God.
  • Envy goes to a great length it goes deep. Its ultimate goal is to kill and destroy completely(it is a silent killer). Good news? God is in the business of protecting his own.
  • Envy does not celebrate others success. Selfish success is evil, not from God.
  • Godliness is the greatest enemy of envy. Where there is Godliness, envy is provoked.envy
