The City

It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LOcityRD is there. (Ezekiel 48:35 [KJV])

The cities are commonly known for what they are what happens therein not often for their true meaning of the name they bear. I had to look for the meaning of Nairobi and this is what I found;

“Nairobi /nˈrbi/ is the capital and largest city of KenyaThe name “Nairobi” comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyrobi, which translates to “cold water”. The phrase is also the Maasai name of the Nairobi river, which in turn lent its name to the city. However, it is popularly known as the “Green City in the Sun” (1)

It is a nice name and it will be good if that name would be what Nairobi is famously known for. However that may not be the case. Nairobi is a prominent city, not only in Africa but in the world. Yet the reasons for being famous have nothing to do with its original name.  The city fame is often associated with what goes on inside the city; it could be crime rate, insecurity or the trade.  Soon the meaning of the name it bears vanishes and the name remains as the source of reference and mere name tag for what it is associated with. “Our cities are increasing in wickedness, and it is becoming more and more evident that those who remain in them unnecessarily do so at the peril of their soul’s salvation. Cities and towns are steeped in sin and moral corruption, yet there are Lots in every Sodom.” (2)

What characterizes the cities? The multitudes of people, the huge buildings, many motor vehicles, industries, trade, services and livelihood am not sure but it is probably all of the above and more. “There is no logic that can be superimposed on the city; people make it, and it is to them, not buildings, that we must fit our plans.” (3) People are attracted to the cities for various reasons and find their way there and soon are hooked to the city. They have attachment to the city because of the reasons best known to them. Some of these reasons could be; earning their daily bread from the city, may be opportunities for better jobs and income, may be the city lifestyle itself etc.

The idea of cities is not bad after all! It came from God I can say, why else would God build and dwell in a city (Jerusalem) for his people? And I John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (Rev 21:2 [KJV]) The problem with cities today is that they have become centers of evil; concentrations of rebellion. That is why we are advised to leave the cities. “As God’s commandment-keeping people we must leave the cities. As did Enoch, we must work in the cities but not dwell in them.” (4)

The City built and established by God is different; there will be no noise and air pollution, no insecurity, no industries and factories, no bumper-to-bumper traffic, no neighborhood issues or evictions. It will be a city called by His name, it shall be identified with Him. That is the kind of place each one should long to dwell.
