So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never fulfill the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh wants is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, and so you do not do what you want to do.Galatians 5:16, 17 [ISV]
Drunkenness comes in several forms in the modern world. As you are aware, the devil is cunning and desires to destroy all therefore his ways are constantly revised to camouflage its harmfulness or rather its sinfulness. The purpose is to make it attractive and desirable so that it can draw one into it and eventually bring destruction. Hence the drugs of all kinds existing today for the purpose of keeping people mentally and physically incapacitated from clear mind that can do right and think right. It enslaves the mind and keeps people away from what is good for them. There are so many brands of liquor packaged attractively and well advertised, from mild to strongest. The deception has even gone further to make ‘harmless products’ branded alcohol free, products that smell and taste like the real one and have packed them like the real ones in order to keep you in the same atmosphere without being ‘guilty’. They have given them names that are appealing such that people would like to relate to them. (Prov 20:1 [KJV]) “Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
Sin is also packaged and labeled the same way. It has to attractive and appealing with the power to draw people to it. If you keenly observe the adverts today you will see this deception and the way it is presented to us in a way that is attractive and there could be some who are falling into such traps. Look at the word ‘mocker’in the text above; it speaks for itself.
Be it liquor, prescription drugs that are misused, marijuana, tobacco or opium and cocaine all these are categorized as harmful drugs. It is said that there is an average of 1 new drug discovered and introduced in a society every five years. These are drugs that are commonly abused and the effect has been devastating among youths and even adults. They have a gripping effect on users and it keeps beckoning the users to come for more. What appears to be simple like cigarette smoking ends in total dependence over tobacco from one cigarette a day to a chain smoker.
Dependency on Drugs is a good and a living example of how the power of evil works. Sin is attractive but once allowed into our lives our bodies keeps craving for more and more, every passing day the demand increases. But even more dangerous is its capacity to keep your minds enslaved and less and less able to discern right and wrong. Let us accustom our bodies to good things then only will our bodies desire good. The flesh will desire good and resist evil. That would be a good struggle. Otherwise for one who is a slave to evil, only a miracle of God’s grace would be required to redeem them. We know that all are redeemed through His grace but when we subject our minds and our will to the control of the evil one, we have lost the power to determine our way. Playing with these substances is to play with the devil’s magnetic force greater that our mental and physical body is able to resist.
Our spiritual conditions or status can be compared to that of drunkenness. We are struggling daily to overcome the desires of flesh. We are fighting battles with flesh daily so that we can act right, live right but the body and sinful clouded mind keeps falling victim of devil’s deceptions. His intended destination for you and I is grave without hope of eternal life. We desire what is sinful even when we know well what is right, we are just like drunkards and we need de-toxin and cleansing. ‘Live by the Spirit’ is my counsel today. It is the only escape from the things of the flesh.
