Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited [me] in the night; thou hast tried me, [and] shalt find nothing; I am purposed [that] my mouth shall not transgress. (Ps 17:3 [KJV])
“When I get ready to talk to people, I spend two thirds of the time thinking what they want to hear and one third thinking about what I want to say.” ― Abraham Lincoln,
Amazing how the mouth is used for the edification of evil and not good. It seems to be the most convenient avenue for diverse propagation of evil. Satan has capitalized on this avenue well. The same mouth is capable of imaginable things both good and bad. It has been used to demonstrate unique talents that could make a difference for God’s glory. A few years ago I heard a gospel soloist presenting an instrumental. Using his vocal as Saxophone and lovely background recorded music he was unbelievable! I could hardly believe it was his bare mouth producing the sound of an instrument. Without seeing I would not have believed. But the extreme is also the case with the same mouth. You hear the way people use their mouth in uttering profanity and nothing but vulgar talk every time they open their mouth, all you hear is filthy cursing and lies.
You also may have seen people putting in their mouth despicable things. Eating raw meats of all kinds for instance, eating live creatures like worms and snakes; chewing of tobacco and bitternuts and tucking them under the tongues or lips, chewing Miraa >>a plant whose fresh leaves and soft twigs are chewed to release a juice containing cathinone and cathine, the active chemicals that alter the mood of the abuser. (Nacada)<< like goats whole day; the same mouth being used for smoking pots, cigarettes and other forms of tobacco, marijuana and other substances; again the same mouth is being used for eating all kinds of foods even the obvious unclean meat, rotten and fermented foods and drinks and the list could go on and on.
David made a vow to use his mouth wisely and not to transgress through his mouth. He realized the potential it had to do evil and that made him to pass a resolution, took a deliberate step to safeguard this vulnerable avenue. You see, without us making assessment of ourselves and come to a realization of areas of our lives that need special attention to safeguard them from the devil we may not be over comers. I like the way Job categorically stated his position concerning his mouth; ”My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.”(Job 27:4 [KJV]) That was not a mere statement is was a declaration.
In the book of Revelation chapter 13 there are references to a mouth that speaks blasphemous things against God and the unclean spirits in chapter 16 which also comes out of the mouth. It indicates how the devil will use mouth to advance his agenda especially in these last days.
It appears to me that, ‘mouth’ will become a major avenue that would place a clear distinct mark between God’s people and those of the Satan. No wonder the saints will be described with the words of (Rev 14:5 [KJV]) “And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.”
How you use your mouth can determine where you belong. The use of our mouths would be sufficient declaration to our loyalty. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Rom 10:10 [KJV]) Guard your mouth!
