As soon Adam was created he was assigned work to do. We are created to do something not seating or idling without a work. God himself works and that’s why we see in Genesis 2:2 [KJV]) “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”(Exod 20:9 [KJV]) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work
When Jesus was on earth he worked many hours daily except Sabbath day which is a day of rest. He instructed his followers (disciples) to carry forward the work he had introduced to them. He left them responsible for doing the work of reaching people giving them hope and love as he did while on earth. And they heeded to that instruction as we see in Mark 16:20 [KJV] “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with [them], and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”
We have a work to do and that work is not to make ends meet or to make ourselves rich and self fulfilled, nor is it for the purpose of acquiring money to support our families and their endless needs; it is for the purpose of communicating God’s mission and the how it has become possible through Jesus to be free of sin and its curse. How we can overcome evil and how we can finally be restored to Him.
Unfortunately we are working hard today to accumulate worldly goodies that are as temporary as our status. The evil one has changed the purpose for our work to that of slavery for stomach, family needs, enjoyment and comfort and so we do anything including over committing ourselves to a lifelong slogging and struggle to earn more to meet our obligations in loans, mortgages, advances and you name it, in order to meet our ever increasing demands.
Work before sin, in the Garden of Eden was of stewardship nature for God’s property. There was no rush or even desire to own anything because all belonged to God. I wonder when did the land become ours for example? The devil has turn all things upside down and now we work, fight, and struggle day and night for what belongs to God instead of doing his will till restoration is over, so that we can be taken back to the state of Eden. Yes we have to work but what are we working for what is the purpose of our work is it in harmony with God’s will is it reaching out in any way to those who are unaware of salvation? Is it a stewardship kind of work?
When you see people jumping all the time from one job to another it can be clear they do not know their purpose for work; they are only looking at greener pastures to fulfill their wants.
Paul worked hard to sustain himself, to afford his daily needs but his main function was to reach out and he never had to beg for anything. He was focused. Some of earn much but give nothing to God’s course, quick to spend heavily for any things we desire but offering peanuts to God’s course which should be our major engagement.
As long as you have known Christ you were inducted into the big work force of God’s mission it will be required of you to account for the faithfulness of the work in your hands. “The work of God is to prepare a people to stand before the Son of man at His coming, and this work should be a unit. . The work above all work,–the business above all others which should draw and engage the energies of the soul,–is the work of saving souls for whom Christ has died. Make this the main, the important work of your life. Make it your special life-work” –E.G. White
